The American Academy in Rome, America’s oldest overseas center for independent studies in advanced research in the arts and humanities, has announced the winners of the Rome Prize. Winners receive a stipend, workspace, and room and board at the Academy’s campus in Rome.

Rome Prize winners in eleven disciplines—ancient studies, architecture, design, historic preservation and conservation, landscape architecture, literature, medieval studies, modern Italian studies, music composition, Renaissance and early modern studies, and visual art—are selected annually by independent juries of artists and scholars. Past winners in literature include Ralph Ellison, Anthony Doerr, Alexandra Kleeman, and Robert Penn Warren.

This year’s Rome Prize fellows in literature are Jamel Brinkley, Assistant Professor, Fiction, Department of Creative Writing, Iowa Writers’ Workshop; Gina Apostol, Teacher, Department of English, Ethical Culture Fieldston School; Tung-Hui Hu, Associate Professor, Department of English, University of Michigan; and Robyn Schiff, Professor, Department of English, Emory University. All four winners will work on creative writing projects during their fellowships in Rome.

“This year’s Rome Prize winners and Italian Fellows represents the diversity of the United States, and their projects build on the Academy’s commitment to the global impact of the arts and humanities,” said Mark Robbins, American Academic in Rome President & CEO.
